The role sits between a business requirement and something that can be built, maintained and still understood a year later. His work is removing ambiguity early: what the system must do, what it must never do, and where the boundary between them sits.
Architecture settled properly at the start is among the cheapest investments the firm makes. Decisions deferred into implementation are paid for repeatedly, in rework and in the caution that follows it.
